Stop youth migration to abroad

Stop youth migration to abroad

Foreign employment is not only a necessity for Nepal, but also for many other poor countries like Nepal. It is also true that many countries have achieved economic prosperity by utilizing remittances received from foreign employment. Even in Nepal, remittances received from foreign employment have become a source of livelihood for many poor Nepalis. Not only this, the country’s economy is fueled by remittances.

On the one hand, the impact of the economic recession around the world has not created employment opportunities in the country. After the political stability, those who hoped that there will be a stable environment within the country have been disappointed. The country has been ruined by political infighting and corruption. Those who think that they will do something in the country are going abroad one after the other. The thought of most of those who migrated abroad to study is to stay there as long as possible. After the children of most of the wealthy and high-ranking people left the country, the same wave has caught the middle class as well. In the country, it is only for disabled elderly and children. Capital flight with the youth is also scary. If the exodus of young people could not be stopped in time, the day is not far when the country will be in a state of decline.

Foreign employment is a compulsion for many. If there was an opportunity to do something and earn something in the country, Nepali youth would not have gone abroad for employment after paying many hunders. Most of the young people chose foreign jobs when they could not earn enough income to meet the minimum needs of the household. In this way, the remittances sent by the expatriate youth meet the minimum needs of their families. Remittances have provided significant support in their children’s education, health care, and daily and social behavior.

Going abroad is not a desire but a compulsion. The political leadership created this compulsion. The tendency to maintain political consensus for corruption, to give immunity to those who break the law and to exploit state resources under this or that pretext are the reasons why the country is lagging behind. Recently, the political involvement in the scandals from Lalitha Niwas to gold smuggling and the chaos in the country has shaken everyone’s mind. Due to the relaxation in the economy, the private sector has also lost enthusiasm.

The dependence on foreign employment can be reduced if the plans and programs to increase the establishment of industries in the country, increase economic activities and increase production can be implemented effectively. A reduction in dependence on foreign employment also means a reduction in existing economic and social problems. No matter how beautiful the economic side of foreign employment is, its ugly side is also becoming very widespread and deeply rooted in the society. It needs to be solved. Otherwise, there is sure to be more challenge to our social structure, culture and social values and beliefs.

The political leadership should understand that if they are happy to see the remittances sent by the expatriates, a more dire situation will follow. Proclaiming a five-year strategy to stop youth migration is not enough. Immediate steps should be taken to address their disappointment, communicate hope and create employment.

One of the main reasons for the increase in the trend of the young generation going abroad is the neglect of the state and the unequal and discriminatory behavior of the state, saying that “staying in this country will do nothing”. Such comments should not be allowed. Millions of young people are not only going abroad for study or job opportunities, they are leaving the country forever. In this way, every year millions of young people migrate abroad in search of opportunities for education, employment and professional development, and there is a growing concern that the country will become an old age home in the future. The state should always be ready to solve any problem faced by Nepalese workers in foreign lands. And remittances alone can be proud of supporting the country’s economy. If the responsible bodies of the state fail to pay serious attention to these matters, the country may fall into more serious problems. It is necessary to pay attention to it in time. There should be no delay in bringing programs and action plans to stop the youth at home.
