Nepal voted for Ukraine: Why did Nepal vote for Ukraine?

Nepal has voted in favor of Ukraine in the UN General Assembly. At the United Nations, 141 countries, including Nepal, have sided with Ukraine, which has been invaded by Russia. Ukraine has strategic allies with the United States, while major nations, including China and Belarus, are divided in opposition.

Russia and Ukraine have stated opposition to using force or imposing sanctions on Ukraine. The United Nations has a total of 193 member nations. The 193 member states of the United Nations had earlier expressed their views on the attack on Ukraine.

Nepal has been against the Russian invasion of Ukraine from the very beginning. This is the fourth time that Nepal has publicly sided with Ukraine. The Foreign Ministry issued a statement on the first day of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. In the statement, Nepal said that Russia’s attack on Ukraine was against the UN Charter.

US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken had a dialogue with Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba only on Tuesday regarding the issue of Ukraine. While 29 nations, including Nepal, voted in favor of Ukraine, China stood in opposition, while India remained neutral without participating in the process. Due to its close ties with Russia, India and other countries have not been able to openly support Ukraine. Nepal, on the other hand, went a step further and sided with the United States in favor of Ukraine and viewed with interest the dialogue between the US Secretary of State and Nepal’s Prime Minister Deuba.
