Ammonia Found in Bottled Water at Kathmandu Plant
Department Finds Harmful ‘Ammonia’ in Kathmandu Water Industry
The Department of Food Technology and Quality Control (DFTQC) has detected Ammonia, a substance harmful to human health, in the water produced by a processing plant in Gothatar, Kageshwari Manohara Municipality.
The discrepancy was discovered on January 21 (Magh 7) during a surprise inspection conducted by the department using its Mobile Food Laboratory Van within the Kathmandu Valley. The inspection targeted Shree Krishna Beverage, located in Gothatar-9. According to the department, kit tests performed inside the mobile laboratory showed a positive result for Ammonia in the industry’s jar water.
Following the discovery of these irregularities in the preliminary tests, the department has collected formal samples for detailed laboratory analysis under the Food Hygiene and Quality Act, 2081. The DFTQC has strictly instructed the industry to fully comply with the provisions of the Processed Drinking Water Production Standards Directive, 2074.
