Bollywood Stars Headline Nepal’s Growing Casino Industry
The arrival of Bollywood celebrities Sanjay Dutt and Sunny Leone in Kathmandu last week has highlighted the rapid expansion of Nepal’s casino industry. The stars were invited as special guests to inaugurate “Casino Badshah,” located within the four-star Barahi Kathmandu Hotel in Keshar Mahal. While Sanjay Dutt led the inauguration, Sunny Leone delivered a high-energy performance, further fueling the buzz surrounding the sector.
A Growing Hub for Entertainment
Nepal’s casino industry is witnessing a significant boom, with 27 companies now authorized to operate. According to the Department of Tourism, most newly established four and five-star hotels are now incorporating dedicated spaces for gaming floors. Industry experts and hotel owners note that casinos have become a primary draw for foreign tourists, particularly from India and China.
Revenue and Regulations
The casino sector is a vital revenue stream for the government. In the fiscal year 2023/24 (B.S. 2080/81), the government collected approximately Rs 1.34 billion through license fees, renewals, and taxes. However, challenges remain, as casinos still owe an estimated Rs 3.50 billion in arrears.
Under Nepali law, entry into casinos is strictly prohibited for Nepali citizens; only foreign nationals and Non-Resident Nepalis (NRNs) are permitted to play. To curb illegal financial activities, the Department of Tourism recently amended the Casino Operator Directives 2025 (2082 B.S.), mandating that casinos must maintain detailed records of any guest who spends more than Rs 200,000.
Impact on Tourism
Tourism entrepreneurs view casinos as a strategic tool to compete with other regional destinations. By offering international-standard gaming floors and high-end security, Nepal aims to elevate its luxury hospitality profile and boost the broader economy, including the restaurant, transportation, and retail sectors.
