Lack of infrastructure and diplomatic initiatives in Nepal and China trade

News that Nepal’s trade has eased is seldom heard. On the other hand, Nepal has to depend on China and India for trade. After the covid 19 epidemic, even the trade towards the northern border, which was considered comfortable, has become uncomfortable for Nepali traders. The main problem of Nepali businessmen is that all the checkpoints are not functioning properly and not enough containers are coming even from the existing checkpoints.

Nepali businessmen bring tens of millions of garments, fruits, garlic, onions and other vegetables through China. The businessmen were in trouble when the Chinese side did not bring even the millions of rupees worth of clothes they were trying to bring for the festival. The problem is still there. Most of the small and medium enterprises are in a lot of trouble as the Rasuwagadhi checkpoint is not easy. These businessmen were running their business by importing goods from China on daily and weekly basis. However, due to the inability to import goods for months, the entrepreneurs have been unable to run their business.similarly, Nepal-China trade is conducted through Yari, Mugu, Korla, Larke, Rasuwagadhi, Tatopani, Lamabgar, Kimathanka and Olangchungola. Although the private sector and the government have tried to facilitate Nepal-China trade, it has not been possible.Nepal’s trade with India has not been smooth. Nepal’s trade with both countries has not been smooth even after hundreds of years. It seems that there is more Indian monopoly in Nepal-India trade. Lately, India has stopped tea exports without any reason. Nepali tea, which has been sold in India as well as in the international market for hundreds of years, has caused inconvenience in Nepal-India trade under the pretext of re-testing by the Indian side.

The Nepal Tea Producers’ Association has also accused India’s recent decision on Nepali tea of trying to obstruct Nepali tea. The Indian side has been obstructing the export of not only tea but also cardamom, ginger and other agricultural products from time to time. Nepal-India trade was completely blocked due to the blockade imposed by India in 2072 BS. During the blockade, the existence of trade was in crisis due to problems in the supply of daily necessities and petroleum products from the Nepal-India border.
