Export of electricity from Nepal to India started
Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) has started exporting electricity to India from Thursday.
After a long effort, the way has been opened to sell Nepal’s surplus electricity at competitive rates in the Indian energy market. According to NEA, the export was started after the water level in the rivers rose and domestic production exceeded the demand.
According to NEA, 37.7 MW of electricity generated from Trishuli and Devighat hydropower projects has been exported to the Indian market.
At present, Nepal’s production has increased to 1300 MW. Nepal’s electricity is being sold through India’s competitive energy exchange market.
In the energy exchange market, there is a separate price for each block. Every 15 minutes, Nepal has its electricity for sale. Electricity of each block is sold at different prices. The maximum price per block is fixed at Rs12.
On an average, electricity is sold at 6.28 paisa per unit. Last April, the Central Electricity Authority under the Ministry of Electricity of India had given approval to the Nepal Electricity Authority to sell additional 325 MW of electricity in the Indian market.
