Nepalese Sacred Month of Shrawan Begins: The Secret Behind Women Wear Bangles and Mehandi in Hand

Nepalese are observing the holiest month of Shrawan from Thursdsy. This month comes on fourth month of Nepali Hindu calendar; which is taken as the sacred month not only in nepal but also in India and all over the world who follows Hindu culture.

This month is consider as the month of “Bholebaba” or let’s say the moth of Lord Shiva, who is known as the powerful god in Hindu religion. Therefore, there is a significance role of this special month for the Lord Shiva’s devotees. To please Bholebaba, every Monday of the month is worshipped by offering milk and other submissions.

People in large number gather in different holy shrines and worship Lord Shiva to ask blessings. They light butter lamps and worship. Unmarried girls fast to get good husbands like the God himself and married women for the safety and peace of their husbands and families.

The month Shrawan is also known as the  month of greenery. In this month, women dress in red, orange , green and yellow attire. Married women do good makeups, wear mehandi, yellow, green and red bangles. Even young girls too follow the same trend like married women throughout this month. Red is the colour associated with husband in our culture and it is also one of the symbols of “shaubhagya”. This is why married women are supposed to wear red, while unmarried women are seen wearing green and yellow bangles.

Due to the demand of bangles, mehandi, jewelry, and green colour of dresses, business too increases in this month. In Shraean, along with the demand for colourful bangles, there is a high demand for red, green and yellow pote in the market in comparison to other months. Likewise, beauty parlors are crowded with women and girls who want to put henna tattoos on their hands.

The Secrecy Behind Women Wear Bangles and Mehandi in Hand in This Month:

– As the Shrawan month begins we can see the greenery is ruling on the nature so, women wear green bangles too on their wrist to symbolize that they are close to the nature. 

 – Mehandi is considered to be extremely important because of it’s scent and coolness to reduse stress, headache and fever..

–  Green bangles are worn to fulfil one’s desire, wishing for a happy and prosperous life of family members that’s why women wear bangles in Shrawan.

– It is believe that Shrawan is the month of good luck or good fortune so, Nepalese women wear mehandi, red and yellow pote, tika and bangles on their wrist.
