Lessons from earthquakes
Natural disasters are always tragic. Those who died in the earthquake cannot be saved no matter how much they cry. Fallen structures can be raised by making new ones. The old ones cannot be revived. Because of that, the future can be made happy by learning lessons from the earthquake. That is what the wise do. Earthquakes come and go. It cannot be stopped. However, earthquake damage can be reduced.
A few days ago, there was a sudden attack on the sleep of the citizens of Jajarkot and Rukum. Some natural disasters are caused by human actions, but this time there was no fault of citizens. Until now, science has not been able to find out how citizens can resist or defend against earthquakes. This time the attack took place in Rukum and Jajarkot to remind the Nepali citizens who have started to feel that they have digested the small earthquake.
Those who directly observed the incident say that the human losses are very low considering the structure and the damage done there. This earthquake, which occurred at midnight when everyone was sleeping, could have killed all the people, but the promptness shown by the local government in the rescue probably helped to reduce the human losses.
So far, 160 people have died and around 300 have been injured in Rukum West and Jajarkot. Animals are dead. They fell home. The grain harvest has been buried. The pain of staying outside this winter is unbearable.
While there has been no earthquake in West Nepal for 520 years, the current small earthquake has not depleted the accumulated power. There may be a big earthquake. can damage. Therefore, it is necessary to find a way to avoid earthquakes by building advanced earthquake resistant structures.
Experts say that if we don’t compromise on the basic materials while building the structure, then five, six, seven Richter scale earthquakes can be easily endured. There are only 8 million houses in Nepal now. After the earthquake of 2072, about 1 million earthquake resistant houses have been built. The state should have a plan to strengthen the structure of old houses, not just build houses with resistance after the earthquake. If it is to be continued as a continuous campaign, it is possible that the Nepali people will suffer both material and human losses due to small earthquakes.
The mistakes made by the government of Nepal after the earthquake in Dolakha, Ramechhap, Sindhuli, Okhaldhunga, Sindhupalchok, Kavre, Bhaktapur, Lalitpur, Makwanpur, Dhading, Bhaktapur, Nuwakot, Rasuwa, Gorkha, Lamjung etc. after the earthquake have left a far-reaching impact on the development. If thin and scattered settlements could be made into integrated settlements (rural towns), the country would be defeated. The government spent Rs 300,000 per house on the people. A safe and rural town could be built with this amount.
Facilities such as water, electricity, primary health, school, college etc. could be provided. It would be beneficial in the long run. The government should not repeat the old mistakes in West Rukum and Jajarkot. Development can be transformed by building an integrated settlement. A leap in development can be made by integrating Patala Basti. The experience and learning of developed countries can be used. In a country like Nepal, unorganized slums are a problem for development. An alternative must be found.
Earthquakes do not occur only in Nepal. There are many countries in Asia that are prone to earthquakes. Turkey has old structures like Nepal. Therefore, even small earthquakes have been causing a lot of damage there. Pakistan is considered to be at high risk due to its dense population. Iran is also one of the most earthquake-prone countries like Turkey. Because of the many tectonic plates in China, there is always a risk of large earthquakes. So far, China has suffered the third destruction in the world. Japan is the most earthquake-prone country.
Earthquakes in these countries are not as dangerous as yesterday because they have built and are building physical structures accordingly. We Nepalis learn a lesson for some time after a dangerous incident but soon forget it. It is only the concern that the citizens of Jajarkot and Rukum should not suffer the fate of other Bhekas that will save us from such a natural calamity.
Earthquake is devastating, even if it has caused extensive damage, it can be compensated in the future. The government made a mistake by hastily letting the beneficiaries of the 2072 earthquake build houses on their own land. Don’t make that mistake in Karnali. Build an integrated settlement. Let the government bring such plans.
