Chhath Begins Today

Chhath is an ancient Hindu Vedic festival . It is a festival,  mainly dedicated to the Sun God. It is a religious festival to express gratitude to nature.

Main rituals of the festival, observed in succession in a period of four days, include Arba-Arbain, kharana, offering argha to the setting sun and also offering argha to the rising sun.

On this festival people offer delicacies such as thakuwa, bhusawa, khajuri, perukiya and fruits such as coconut, banana, citrus fruits, and other articles such as nanglo, koniya, saraba and dhakan, among others.

In some communities, Once a family member starts performing Chhath Puja, it is their compulsory duty to perform it every year and to pass it on to the following generations. The festival is skipped only if there happens to be a death in the family that year. If the person stops performing the ritual on any particular year, it stops permanently and one cannot resume it again. In yet other communities, this is not mandatory.
