Aung San Suu Kyi sentenced to four years in prison
KATHMANDU: Myanmar’s pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi has been sentenced to four years in prison. The military says he was convicted of violating coronavirus laws under the Natural Disasters act .The 76-year-old has been charged with 11 other offenses, according to the BBC. However, Suu Kyi said the allegations against her were baseless.
Suu Kyi led an elected civilian government before Myanmar’s military overthrew her in February. The army was ousted, citing election fraud. The National Democratic League, which is on the list, won the election. Since then, Suu Kyi has been under house arrest .Myanmar’s military has arrested a number of leaders, including state councilors and foreign ministers, President Win Mint, senior NLD leaders, lawmakers and members of the regional cabinet.
