Senior Citizens: A Living Book
Senior citizens are our guides, we are what we are today because of them. The senior citizens who have given all their desires and wishes and spent their energetic time in the care and guidance of their families, who have contributed to the nation, are our living books. Senior citizens are the ornaments of every home. They are worthy of worship like gods.
Senior citizens are longing to serve the motherland by contributing freely to the journey of country’s prosperity. The state should not fail to make plans and policies to make use of the unlimited experiences of senior citizens in the development of the country.
Some studies have found that senior citizens are deprived of the services they should receive from the state, including social, economic and health security. In reality, it has been found that senior citizens are suffering, depressed and miserable compared to other groups. In the environment where the trend of living in single families is increasing from joint families, it is felt that the environment in which senior citizens can enjoy themselves economically, socially and mentally is decreasing.
The traditional practice of living in a joint family is gradually being deviated from and the habit of living in a single family is increasing. The sense of duty and responsibility towards the elderly is gradually being neglected. Because of this, elders have become alienated from family affection. The number of elderly people who are forced to live a life of misery and inferiority complex is increasing. Old age is a condition that must be reached once in the human life cycle. Hurting the hearts of senior citizens, who are the mine of love, affection and compassion, is a suicidal step for the children, society and the government.
There are many examples of senior citizens not getting proper respect in their families. When family members are not sensitive to their parents or elders and do not behave with proper respect, then the state should consider its responsibility to bring the family members who do not provide proper sustenance and respect to the law and manage such senior citizens. In addition to providing protection and social security to senior citizens, the state must be sensitive to increase respect, respect and goodwill towards them by utilizing their knowledge, skills, abilities and experience and properly manage the services and facilities provided by the state. It is not that there are no efforts by the state in this regard, but were they not enough or were the efforts only on paper? A careful study and analysis is essential.
For the effective implementation of the welfare provisions contained in the Senior Citizens Act and Regulations, there should be cooperation and sense of responsibility between the federal, state and local governments. The welfare work done for senior citizens can be meaningful only with the harmony, support, cooperation and coordination of governmental and non-governmental organizations in the operation and cooperation of social security programs
It is natural for health problems to appear after age. Therefore, a geriatric ward should be established in each hospital with expert doctors and equipment for the treatment of senior citizens. Multivitamins and calcium needed for senior citizens should be distributed regularly. It is absolutely necessary to provide free ambulance service to senior citizens and provide air ambulance service at a discount.
Currently, there are some discounts for senior citizens in public transport. It should be improved and at least 50% discount should be given to senior citizens in buses, taxis, airplanes etc. Similarly, senior citizens should also be given a revenue discount on the purchase of real estate. On this additional deposit, the bank should arrange to give some higher interest and give some discount on the insurance premium.
We have to take the advice, advice, advice of senior citizens. Governments at all three levels should develop a strategy for the state system to take advantage of senior citizens who lack knowledge, experience and behavior.
