US rescues 1,700 people a day from Afghanistan
The United States rescued 1,700 people from Afghanistan in a single day on Sunday. A total of 34,000 people were rescued from 39 planes, including 1,700 Americans, according to the White House.
US citizens and Afghans who worked for the US forces in Afghanistan continued to attempt to get to the airport in Kabul to leave the country.
There were numerous accounts of some struggling to reach and enter the airport, some impeded by Taliban fighters who now control Kabul.
Thousands of Afghans have been fleeing the country since the Taliban seized power on August 15.
