Biden says troops will not withdraw from Kabul until all Americans are rescued
US President Joe Biden has said the US military will not leave Kabul until all Americans have been rescued from Afghanistan. In an interview with ABC News on Wednesday, he said the government was committed to bringing all Americans out of Afghanistan.
The United States has so far rescued 5,000 civilians, including its diplomatic staff. The United States has already decided to withdraw all its troops by August 31 this year.
An estimated 10,000 to 15,000 Americans are still in Afghanistan. According to Biden, between 50,000 and 65,000 Afghans supporting the US mission want to leave the country later.
Meanwhile, Taliban fighters opened fire on anti-Taliban protesters in the eastern city of Jalalabad yesterday. At least three people were killed when protesters tried to remove the Taliban flag and hoist the Afghan flag in Jalalabad.
